The Old Covenant

Ok, under the old covenant...was anyone outside of the Jewish faith allowed to get to heaven. It is my understanding that the Jews were the chosen people and it was only after Jesus' death that others were invited to have the privilege. So what happened to all of the other people pre-Christ?

A friend told me that they are all in purgatory because the gates of heaven were closed. Does this mean they all will get to heaven eventually? In addition, does this mean that after Christ came it became harder to get into heaven?

It is still just as difficult to get to heaven. Not all got to heaven of course, some were still damned due to their actions, works, and lack of faith. Christ opened heaven, and then the souls waiting for him were finally let in.

Hay, I think this is on topic, but who gets into purgatory and who goes directly to Hell? (A protestant asks of a catholic)
